Deep Green Data Center Buildings
OUR GOAL
Data centers are the physical backbone of our digital age. Demand for data center capacity is booming, driven by exponential growth in the amount of data produced globally. However, it is important to us, to develop data centers with an environmental conscious and modular mindset to meet growing demand while protecting our climate. We have gathered partners and a Core Set of Tools to deliver climate-friendly CO2-neutral data centers over their lifecycle.
LOCATIONS
TRIVERRA focuses on locations in German Tier 2 and Tier 3 locations at power grid and data hubs with large spatial potential. Data centers are being built here in conjunction with battery energy storage systems and renewable energy sources for international technology companies (hyperscalers). Energy development is achieved via power grid connections to transmission system operators, and digital connections via international data lines.
TURN-KEY FOR INVESTORS
TRIVERRA develops its projects as turnkey solutions for investors. Data centers, BESS parks, and green energy sources are developed as independent subprojects, and operational collaboration is ensured through contracts between the operators. Managing the complex interrelationships between the subprojects allows us to optimize the individual revenue models and the overall profitability of the projects.

Track Record
GREEN IT CUBE
The "Green IT Cube" on the GSI/FAIR campus is one of the world's most powerful scientific data centers. At the same time, it sets standards in IT technology and energy savings. The water-based cooling process, developed at Goethe University and the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research through the collaboration of Prof. Dr. Volker Lindenstruth, Prof. Dr. Horst Stöcker, and Alexander Hauser, leads to a reduction in cooling energy requirements of up to 90%.
TRIVERRA´S co-founder, Markus Bodenmeier, with a former company, NDC Data Centers GmbH, was involved in the development and patenting of this technology and obtained the commercialization rights to the patents. NDC Data Centers GmbH merged into today's Garbe DC.
GOOGLE CLOUD DATA CENTER
The Google Cloud data center in Hanau was Google's first dedicated data center in Germany. It was planned and built as a joint venture between Markus Bodenmeier, his former NDC Data Center GmbH, and GARBE Industrial Real Estate GmbH. Google's focus is to operate the data center energy-efficiently and to supply it with 100% green electricity by 2030.
During the development of the Hanau data center, cooling was implemented for the first time as a hybrid solution, partially utilizing patents from the Green IT Cube. Another step forward in sustainability and innovation, Hanau’s data center uses a combination of air pressure and ambient air cooling methods to mitigate the risk of water scarcity while ensuring high energy efficiency.
Core Set of Tools
GREEN BUILDINGS
TRIVERRA focuses in its projects particularly on solving ecological challenges. This begins with the selection of the site and the integration of the structures into the landscape.
To minimize the embedded emissions of large data center buildings, a hybrid mass timber construction system from TRIVERRA´s partner Hyperion Global Cities is used to the extent possible. This system uses nature-based technology to passively stabilize humidity and temperature levels of the data centers. Moreover, it can be dismantled and reused elsewhere at the end of data center’s life (circular economy).
24/7 CFE PPA´s
At the heart of the energy supply for our data center sites are 24/7 CFE PPAs. Achieving a high hourly match of >85% in the projects requires careful dimensioning to adapt green electricity from wind power, photovoltaics, and energy storage to the data center demand profile in real time. Depending on the data center capacity, grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) are being developed at the sites in conjunction with green power sources, or green electricity supply via the power grid is ensured. Depending on the location, controllable energy sources such as biomass are integrated, too.
POWER WITHIN THE FENCE
TRIVERRA evaluates site selection based on, among other things, the potential for local green power generation through wind power, solar parks, biomass, or other green energy sources. This enables the integration of specific green power projects that benefit from the permanent energy sink of data centers and create greater independence from the power grid.
In addition to greater independence from the power grid, on-site green power generation offers the advantage of lower electricity costs, which is a major advantage for data center operators.
OFFSETTING EMISSIONS
The development, equipment, and operation of data centers still generate unavoidable embedded emissions and, despite the use of green electricity, operational emissions. To offset the environmental impacts of these projects, TRIVERRA is developing its own Rainforest Conservation Projects.
Based on life cycle analyses of the projects, TRIVERRA incorporates high-quality carbon or biodiversity certificates into the project developments to achieve climate neutrality of the data centers and BESS projects.
Let’s Work Together
We’re always looking for new locations for Data Centers, primarily in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets across Europe. In addition, we are comfortable working in joint ventures and are open to collaborate with new partners and investors, primarily in European and North American markets. Please get in touch, and we will reach out to you to discuss collaborations.
